LONG RANGE
STRATEGIC PLANNING FOR HOSPITALS
Typically, Partners
undertakes a strategic planning effort with a client hospital after it
has completed a market assessment. In our view, only once a "context"
has been created can a plan for the future be effectively developed. To
do so, Partners begins a planning effort with a strategic visioning
effort that brings clarity and understanding to the client’s:
- Customer needs
- Gaps between
supply and demand
- Role in addressing
and meeting these gaps
- Consideration of
the impact of new technology on medical use rates.
A primary goal of
such a planning effort is to limit the number of key strategies that
emerge from the planning process, in order to properly focus the
organization. Key strategies generally relate to clinical quality
improvement, cost reduction, optimization of financial performance,
enhanced physician relationships, integration of healthcare service
continuum, and caring of the un-/under-insured.
